Elekta and Philips have paved the way for a new integrated system

The unique system merges a 1.5 Tesla high-field MRI with a radiation therapy system. The initial components of the first-generation system were installed in University Medical Center in Utrecht, Netherlands.

The unique combination of these two powerful diagnostic and radiotherapy tools will allow doctors to see high-resolution images of tumors and simultaneously deliver and adjust radiotherapy. These two systems work in harmony, to provide maximal diagnostic and therapeutic potential. Using these two synergic systems, doctors can provide individualized radiation doses, reducing undesired side effects and increasing treatment accuracy.

The main components (ring gantry) were installed on April 5th, and the rest are scheduled to be installed in the upcoming months. Before the systems can be used in the clinic, they must be evaluated through rigorous testing and quality assurance techniques.
